Grilled cheese
Grilled cheese is one of those classic comfort foods that never goes out of style. It’s easy to make, delicious, and always hits the spot. Whether you’re making it for a quick snack or a full meal, grilled cheese never disappoints.
While the basic recipe for grilled cheese is pretty standard - bread, cheese, butter - there are a lot of ways to take it to the next level. In this recipe, we’ll be making an English-style grilled cheese, which is a bit more indulgent and flavorful than your average sandwich.
To start, we’ll need some good quality bread. I recommend a crusty sourdough or a rustic whole grain. Something with a bit of heft to it will hold up well to the rich and gooey cheese we’ll be adding later. Slice the bread into thick slices, about 1/2 inch each.
Next, we’ll need some cheese. For an English-style grilled cheese, I like to use a blend of cheddar and Stilton. Cheddar is a classic English cheese, and Stilton adds a tangy, slightly funky flavor that pairs perfectly with the rich butter and bread.
Butter is a key ingredient in any grilled cheese recipe, and in this one, we’ll be using quite a bit of it. We’ll be buttering both the inside and the outside of the bread, which might seem excessive, but trust me - the result is worth it.
To start assembling the sandwich, take one slice of bread and spread a generous amount of butter on one side. Then, place a layer of cheddar cheese on top of the butter. Next, add a layer of Stilton cheese. Finally, top with another slice of bread that has been buttered on both sides.
Repeat with the rest of the slices of bread and cheese until you have as many sandwiches as you need.
Now it’s time to cook the sandwiches. Preheat a large frying pan over medium-low heat. Once it’s hot, add the sandwiches to the pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is crispy and golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.
Once the sandwiches are cooked, take them off the heat and let them cool for a minute or two before cutting them in half and serving.
These English-style grilled cheese sandwiches are perfect for a cozy night in, a lazy Sunday afternoon, or even a fancy brunch. They’re cheesy, buttery, and delicious, and they’ll leave you feeling warm and satisfied. So next time you’re in the mood for a classic grilled cheese, give this recipe a try and take it up a notch with some English flair.
