Lemon potatoes (potatoes cooked with lemon)
Greek cuisine is known for its healthy, flavorful dishes, and the humble potato is no exception. Whether served as a side dish to lamb, fish or chicken, Greek Lemon Potatoes or ‘patates lemonates’ is a classic Mediterranean recipe that is simple, delicious, and easy to prepare. This recipe is a perfect example of traditional Greek cooking which combines simple ingredients to create dishes that are full of flavor, and Greek lemon potatoes are no exception.
The secret to making perfect Lemon Potatoes is using the best ingredients and mastering the balance of flavors. Typically, potatoes are peeled and cut into wedges, then cooked with olive oil, fresh lemon juice, garlic, oregano, salt and pepper. Finally, they are baked in the oven for a crispy, golden result. The potatoes absorb all the wonderful flavors and become tender, with the added bonus of crispy edges.
The dish is believed to have originated in the Mediterranean region, and precisely on the Greek islands, and has since become a staple in Greek cuisine, particularly in the regions of the Aegean islands, Peloponnese, and Crete.
When it comes to ingredients, there’s no substitute for fresh lemon juice, and Greek extra virgin olive oil. The lemon gives the potatoes a tangy flavor, while the olive oil ensures that the potatoes are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. A sprinkle of oregano at the end brings a delightful herbaceous note that perfectly complements the acidity of the lemon.
Not only is this dish delicious, but it’s also healthy. Potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C, B vitamins, minerals, and fiber, while adding lemon juice to your diet aids in digestion and provides an immune boost with its high Vitamin C content.
This recipe can be altered to suit your tastes. You may use any type of potato you prefer, but it’s best to select a waxy potato that holds its shape well, such as Yukon Gold. If you enjoy more flavor, fresh herbs such as thyme or rosemary are excellent additions. Some variations even include chicken or fish baked along with the potatoes for a complete meal.
Greek Lemon Potatoes are versatile and can be served at any time of the day, whether as a side to a hearty meat dish, or by themselves as a light vegetarian meal. The dish is also an ideal addition to any festive spread, such as Easter and other celebrations.
To sum it up, Greek Lemon Potatoes are a simple yet delicious dish that highlights the beauty of Greek cuisine. With perfectly balanced flavors that keep the dish light, lemon potatoes are a must-try for anyone exploring Mediterranean cooking. The dish is perfect for those looking for a quick, easy and flavorful meal, that is also incredibly healthy. With its crispy outside and tender, fragrant inside, be ready to offer seconds to anyone at the table.
